Charlotte Seymour MSc, BSc

I’m Lotte - the scientist and nail tech behind Mani‑Science©, as well as the founder of Manicure Roulette© and Paint Cure Peel - all umbrellered by my company Dr Prints & Co.

My background combines five years of higher education with research and real experience within the nail industry.

Since launching Mani‑Science© in 2024, I’ve taught Gel Nail Science through my educational handbooks, online courses, lectures and delivered talks for brands including OPI and Nail Order, as well as at nail events and trade shows.

Mani‑Science© is where my scientific knowledge and understanding of real nail tech life come together.

My undergraduate degree covered the manufacture of dental devices alongside the science of polymeric, metallic and ceramic materials, their properties and their use within the human body.

My master’s degree expanded my knowledge beyond dental materials, focusing more widely on biomaterials, regenerative medicine and the ways materials interact with biological systems.

I trained as a gel nail professional in 2019 and have practical experience working with gel nail products, clients and the everyday realities of being a nail tech.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Before nails, there were dental & biomaterials.

MY HIGHER EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS.

I have a First Class BSc (Hons) Dental Technology and an MSc Biomaterials & Regenerative Medicine with Distinction.

Across five years of higher education, I studied a range of materials, how they behave and how they interact with the human body - knowledge that later became unexpectedly relevant to gel nail products.

My route into the nail industry wasn't planned.

HOW I ENTERED THE NAIL INDUSTRY.

I trained as a gel nail professional while taking a medical break from my master’s degree, following the beginning of several chronic illnesses.

I later returned, completed my MSc and secured a scholarship for a part-time PhD. After three weeks, I made the difficult decision to leave - partly because of my health and partly because I had discovered how much I loved building Dr Prints & Co.

Leaving academia didn’t mean leaving science behind - it just changed how I chose to use it.

DISCOVERING MY DEGREE'S ARE RELEVANT TO GEL NAIL SCIENCE.

My background in Dental Technology and Biomaterials became unexpectedly relevant when I started working with gel nail products.

The chemistry and development of gel and acrylic nail systems are closely connected to dental materials, including acrylic systems and light-cured resins. Several longstanding names within the professional nail industry also began with links to dental materials.

As a scientist, I knew the underlying science - but, as a newly trained nail tech, I could also see just how much of it was missing from professional nail education.

We were being taught how to use the products, but not always given enough understanding of what they contain, how they work, how to assess the claims being made about them or the potential issues that may arise.

My own training left me with questions, so I started researching the available scientific literature for myself.

That's where Mani-Science© began.

Why I created Mani-Science.

WHY MANI-SCIENCE STARTED.

The more I researched, the clearer it became that the information nail professionals needed often wasn’t reaching them in a useful or understandable way - if at all.

It was hidden within scientific papers, explained using inaccessible terminology or shared by people who understood the science - but didn’t necessarily understand nail techs or the reality of working within the industry.

At the same time, marketing claims, misinformation and social media scaremongering were making it increasingly difficult to know who - or what - to believe and trust.

I wasn’t an outside scientist looking into an unfamiliar industry. I was a nail tech myself, using the products, dealing with clients and encountering the same gaps in education as everyone else.

That's why Mani‑Science® began.

THE GOAL

I don't want to tell you what to think.

I want to give you the scientific understanding to work it out for yourself.

Mani‑Science® translates complex research and science into clear, relevant education - without unnecessary jargon, brand bias or talking down to the nail professionals it was created for.

It focuses on what your original training left out, rather than repeating the practical skills you already use every day.

The aim is to help you question the claims, recognise misinformation and make confident, informed and independent decisions about the products you use.
